It’s 40°C (104°F) outside. Your client calls you in a panic: “The cold room stopped working! The ice cream is melting!”
You arrive at the site and find the condensing unit is dangerously hot, and the High-Pressure Switch has tripped to protect the compressor. You reset it, it runs for 20 minutes, and then trips again.
This scenario is the biggest headache for contractors in tropical climates. But why does it happen? And more importantly, why do some “cheap” units fail while professional units keep running?
At PENPOS, we design for reality, not just for laboratories. Let’s dive into the root cause of summer breakdowns.
A refrigeration cycle is basically moving heat from inside the cold room to the outside air. The Condenser (the outdoor radiator) is responsible for dumping this heat.
The problem is that many standard condensing units imported from Europe or designed for cooler regions are rated for an ambient temperature of 32°C or 35°C.
When summer hits Southeast Asia or the Middle East, rooftops can easily reach 45°C or 50°C. At these temperatures, a “standard” sized condenser is simply too small to reject the heat fast enough. The refrigerant pressure skyrockets, and the safety switch cuts the power to save the compressor from exploding.

We see this all the time. Desperate technicians advise clients to spray water on the condenser coil with a garden hose during the hottest part of the day.
While this temporarily lowers the pressure, it is a terrible long-term solution:
Corrosion/Rust: The water quickly destroys the aluminum fins and copper tubes.
Mineral Scale: Hard water leaves white scale deposits on the coil, which acts like insulation and makes heat transfer even worse over time.
If you have to spray water on a unit to keep it running, the unit is poorly designed for your climate.

We know that a compressor (like Bitzer or Copeland) is only as good as the system around it.
If you are building cold storage in a hot region like the Philippines, Thailand, or Dubai, you cannot use a standard “catalog” unit.
At PENPOS, we engineer our tropical series condensing units with a crucial difference: Oversized Condenser Surface Area.
Larger Coils: We use larger condenser coils with wider fin spacing (to prevent dust clogging).
Higher TD Design: We design our units to operate efficiently even when the ambient temperature is 43°C+. This ensures the condensing temperature stays within safe limits, even on the hottest days of the year.
The result? Your client’s food stays frozen, and your phone stops ringing with emergency calls.

A high-pressure trip isn’t bad luck; it’s usually a sign of undersized equipment for the local climate.
Don’t risk your reputation by installing cheap units that can’t handle the heat. Partner with a manufacturer who understands tropical conditions.
